Yoga is the journey of the Self, through the Self, to the Self

The Bhagavad Gita

Gregor's relaxation yoga consists of various elements.

The physical part contains a combination of Iyengar yoga & critical alignment , with an emphasis on precision and alignment of postures in combination with attentiveness and full attention (mindfulness). Yin yoga gives in postures where the emphasis is on releasing tension, holding positions for longer periods of time, allowing exploration and shifting of body boundaries and deeper body perception.

The last part of the class everyone takes place in Savasana , a position in lying position. Through guided meditation and focused breathing exercises the body is given the opportunity to fully relax through the mind and the breath.

The
MIND BODY connection

'It's about restoring the mind-body conversation'

In addition to the three most important pillars of health; nutrition, exercise and sleep, there is also relaxation. Science is increasingly discovering what 'mind-body interventions' can do for our health; even down to the level of our DNA and our genes.

One of the conclusions is that genes involved in stress-related inflammation [NF-kB-targeted genes] are 'turned off', which reverses the influence of chronic stress. In other words; by practicing yoga and meditation in combination with specific breathing techniques, we strengthen our immune system and are more resilient to viral attacks such as Covid-19.

We often breathe much too fast

You may wonder what the connection is between breathing and various psychological and physical complaints? The connection is often not directly observable and in the medical world it is often given little attention, but it will not surprise you that we often unconsciously breathe much too fast. Sitting quietly on a chair, millions of people breathe more than 16 times per minute. That is equivalent to cycling 18 km/h against the wind. A considerable effort, while it is actually not necessary because at rest a frequency of 6-8 times per minute should be more than sufficient. Why do we do that then?

Our breathing depends on our state of mind. Thinking hard or worrying can make you breathe 5x faster. If the head is always 'full' of thoughts and there is excessive brain activity, it becomes a 'habit' to breathe quickly and restlessly. You usually no longer notice that your thoughts influence your breathing. The body goes into a state of high alert with a high heart rate and a lot of adrenaline. If this state lasts too long, many different complaints can arise; including psychological complaints, such as anxiety attacks, traumatic memories and depressive moods. But also various physical complaints that initially seem difficult to explain, such as chronic fatigue, (head) pain, back and neck complaints, but also intestinal and sleep complaints, stress, restlessness and poor concentration, tense muscles, your heart skips a beat, you see less well, falling asleep is difficult or sleeping through the night is no longer possible... etc. Do you recognize these complaints?

Bram Bakker and Koen de Jong wrote a book about this in which the connection between breathing, the psyche and physical complaints is explained in detail: VERADEMING (link)

People think that influencing breathing is difficult, but it is still easier than changing behavior patterns or thoughts. Good breathing has a much greater influence on well-being than most people think.
